In a noble Spartan family two sons are born: Brithos, strong and healthy, and Talos, lame and weak. According to harsh Spartan law, the deformed child must be abandoned on Mount Taygetus, but Talos is secretly rescued by a Helot, a member of the enslaved people ruled by Sparta. Brithos grows up as a full Spartan warrior, while Talos, raised among slaves, learns the history and legends of the Helots and the prophecy that the armor of their last king will one day be worn by the liberator of his people.
